Star Ocean: First Departure R tells the story of Roddick, Millie and Dorne, self-appointed local village defence force and residents of the rather backwards planet of Roak which has found itself in the grip of a mysterious illness that's been turning its inhabitants to stone. However, it's also very much a product of its time, nowhere near as complex or gripping as the second game in the series, and it tends to waste a lot of time with endless backtracking and random enemy encounters that make the whole thing a little bit of a chore to grind your way through. It runs about twenty hours so doesn't outstay its welcome and many of its systems - real time battles on 3D battlefields and extremely deep crafting - are still quite impressive to this day. While the real-time combat can be repetitive, many mechanics, like the tactics that govern you allies’ actions or switching characters during battle, would later be implemented in other games.This is still a pretty fun little RPG to play. Equally innovative at its time, was the combat system.

With crafting playing a major role in the game as you’ll be crafting various stuff, often with a lot of trial and error.
These skills not only improve that stats of your characters, but also lets them learn new abilities, including special attack but also skills like cooking, alchemy or crafting.
As you level up, you’ll acquire Special Points (SP) which you can allocate towards different skills. What also plays an influence here are the so-called Private Actions that deepen your bond with your allies, which also affects the story and the ending.įurthermore, the game has a very deep customization and crafting system. You can recruit up to eight different companions, but their availability depends on previous actions and whoever is in year team also influences the way the story evolves, leading up to different endings. In terms of gameplay, the game is mostly known for its approach to your companions and its skill system. The story about some friends from medieval-like planet who get dragged into a space and time traveling adventure with a galactic war on the background is still the same. Different times, different practices, you might say.ĭespite the quality of life-improvements, the core of the game is obviously still the same as nearly 25 years ago.

The save system also felt archaic (small tip: save whenever you can and use multiple saveslots!) and the game isn’t intend on holding your hand, leaving it up to you to figure it out where you need to go or what you need to do exactly (although the world map introduced in the PSP version does help a lot). Loading times can be a nuisance, especially every time you enter one of the many random battles. While the real-time combat system might have been ahead of its time in 1996, it feels rather simple and repetitive today. Having them available on current generation systems makes it a lot easier for those who are interested in (re)visiting these classic without the necessity of having to buy a retro console and trying to find these games on the second hand market.īut even being a remake, Star Ocean First Departure R is still pretty much a product of its time and it isn’t as sophisticated as its contemporary brethren. While purists will most likely stick to the original version, I do believe that the additions make these ports worthwhile. We have to hand it to Square Enix and the respective developers that they put a lot of work into all these remakes of their classic JRPG’s.
On top of that you can also chose between an English dub, the First Departure voice-over or a new re-recorder voice over with the voice actors of the Super Famicom version. The studio behind this port also includes some other features like a newly re-balanced game difficulty, the option to travel at a faster speed and the option to toggle between character portraits from the PSP version or newly designed portraits based on the original character art. This version would then be used for the HD port we’re talking about. This new version of the game not only included reworked graphics and new animations, but also two new party members, fully voiced dialogues and even animated cutscenes from the lauded animation studio Production I.G ( Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion).

We had to wait until 2008 to discover the origins of Star Ocean after it received a remake on the PlayStation Portable called Star Ocean First Departure. Unfortunately, this game didn’t get a release outside of Japan back in the day. This despite the long history of the series, which kicked off in SNES era.

Despite being a fan of JRPG for quite a few years, it’s funny I did’t get acquainted with the Star Ocean series until 2016 with the release of Star Ocean: Integrity & Faithlessness.
